Representaion (boring answer)- symbol that stands in for something in the world. Can take many forms- images, arbitrary symbols like numbers, neurons, or randomly chosen objects in the world. Representaion (less boring answer)- symbol that relects disincions that exist in world. Having representaions is most helpful if they relect disincions in the world. Can be used to interpret experience, predict events, and make inferences. Want them to tell you something helpful; like a map for interacing in world. Funcioning isomorphism- system 1 (mind) is like a map that has eniies, relaions, and operaions that correspond to the eniies, relaions, and operaions in system 2 (the world) Navigaion is a case study in mental representaion. Navigaion requires representaions of not only familiar terrain, but also of novel environments, and how to integrate the known with the novel. Operaions- computaions that calculate distances and direcions between landmarks. Each species has a diferent way for navigaing.
