PSYC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Dalit, Lawrence Summers, Ingroups And Outgroups
Document Summary
What psychological basis does grouping serve: instinct to group things is found in very young children, basis on which we group can be meaningless and arbitrary, but the distinctions we come to make between groups are significant. Experiment: 112 managers were given 4 resumes with photos attached of male/female and attractive/unattractive faces. These results emerged even though resumes were all the same. Age and occupation also have influence: women are less likely to be promoted, even when other factors like productivity are controlled, at harvard, few females were getting tenure. Also said that these explanations were listed in order of importance. Males and females use different strategies to solve verbal math problems. When problems permit either spatial or verbal solutions, males prefer spatial and perform better on spatial-type questions. Performance gap narrows however when all students are told to use spatial strategy. Overtime, the sat has shifted to include more spatial questions, which produces a bias towards male students.
