Document Summary

Broca"s aphasia- results from damage to broca"s area and surrounding areas: studying gave insight into how speech production works in the brain, effects include: Paraphasic errors (say petal instead of pencil) Responses make sense but are not grammatically correct. Use content words, lack of function words. Disrupted comprehension- not just difficulty in getting words out. Articulation difficulties: strokes (in all brain areas) causes cell death. This can have a negative effect on other undamaged areas because the cells that these damaged areas project to are not receiving input. Impact depends on the interconnectedness of area that is damaged. Wernicke"s aphasia- results from damage to wernicke"s areas and surrounding areas: effects include: Superficially, language appears grammatical patients are not aware that they are speaking nonsensically, still follow social conventions (like replying when asked a question) Feedback about responding is impacted: a lot of info from auditory cortex goes to wernicke"s area then broca"s area.
