PSYC 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Waggle Dance, Ontogeny, Gray Wolf
Document Summary
Mediating social interactions is critical mechanism for living in social groups. This is accomplished primarily with communication signals. Many species use a combination of all 3 sensory signaling pathways (visual, acoustic, olfactory) Grey wolf- uses a lot of acoustic signaling- howling- etc, (do so to reunite old pack or territorial) olfactory- scent mark for the territorial thing. Honey bees- in book- waggle dance language- stereotyped way of dancing in their hive: social rules. There are no egalitarian societies" in any animals species. Social coherence is maintained through a system of social rules, which govern how individuals can interact. At the heart of this a dominance hierarchy. Typically there are separate hierarchies for males and females. The chimpanzee male dominance hierarchy is linear. To reach the top, individuals much rise up using a combo of strength and social relationships- (often not the strongest just most cunning) Receive grooming from subordinates but never actually groom subordinates.
