Characteristics of behavior: involves an individual"s actions not labels (freudian ideas are centered on labels), labels have no explanatory power they only describe, involves measurable dimensions. Latency- how long it takes to occur/express itself (time it takes for person to say um they start speaking) after. Modifying behavior requires a change in these dimensions. To decide if something is a behavior, use dead man test- something is a behavior if a dead man cannot do it. Includes physiological reactions, can be involuntary or voluntary. 4)has an impact on the environment (physical or social, including yourself) Behavior follows some laws/governing principles in the environment in which it occurs (lecturing happens more likely in a class, as opposed to another environment) Overt-out in open for everyone to see (biting nails as sign of anxiety) Covert-internal, observer cannot directly see behavior without special equipment (increased heart rate as sign of anxiety)
