PSYC 154 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Abscissa And Ordinate, Confounding
Document Summary
Chapter 3 notes- graphing behavior and measuring change. Goal of graphing is to make something meaningful out of the data (analyze) so that we see what we"re looking for (overall increase/decrease in behavior) Graph-visual representation of occurrence of behavior over time, makes it easier to compare the level of behavior before and after treatment. Is used in research to evaluate behavior change. Y axis (ordinate) is usually frequency, but should reflect the dimension that is recorded. If treatment is effective, will be trend or variation in data points, not random fluctuation or flat line. Six necessary components: x axis, y axis, axis labels, axis numbers/units, data points, phase lines (vertical line that indicates change in treatment), and phase labels. Look at trends, not just start and endpoints (treatment may become more effective overtime) Degree of overlapping data- compare between standard and subject"s behavior, or effectiveness of 2 treatments.
