Unipolar- only lows, bipolar- high and low periods. Severe, recurrent temper outbursts that are inconsistent with developmental level, combined with persistent irritable mood. Symptoms must last longer than 12 months and must occur in at least 2 settings. Can only be diagnosed in children between 6 and 18 years old. Not much is known about prevalence and treatment, new to dsm5. Symptoms must last for 2 weeks and one needs to be depressed mood or anhedonia, need. Characterized by lack of hope: treatment focuses on fact that symptoms will go away at some point. Goals of therapy- to shorten duration of symptoms and prevent recurrent episodes. Mild depressed symptoms, must last for 2 years. May or may not meet criteria for major depressive disorder: if mdd patients symptoms last for 2 years, diagnosis changed to dysthymia. Statistics: late onset, early 20s, more of a biological basis to dysthymia than mdd, early onset= poorer prognosis.
