P-value: the probability (expressed as a percent) that given a statistical summary would be equal to, or greater than, the actual observed results- under the conditions of a true null hypothesis. Thesis: over the past 50 years (and most notable since the industrial revolution) anthropogenic inputs have contributed to increases in atmospheric co2 levels and decreases in the ph of the world"s oceans. Null hypothesis: over the past 50 years (and most probably prior to that time) anthropogenic inputs have not affected atmospheric co2 levels of the ph of the world"s oceans. Use t test when you don"t know the population size & you have two samples. P value greater than 0. 05 = not statistically significant.
