Document Summary

Racism - an ideology of inferiority of a specific group of individuals which is used to justify unequal opportunities. Ses explains part why, it is a mediator of worse health. Residential situation > access to education + employment opportunities. Racist policies of segregation created in the past still impacts the present. Poor quality neighborhood > education, quality of health care , redlining this causing higher exposure to toxins, less access to good quality of resources, worse security. Physical and mental health - the accumulation of lifelong discriminatory stress > having physiological influence and behavioral influence. We see that black women who have higher education has a smaller percentage of infant mortality. We see racism through these numbers because white women with higher education has a smaller likelihood of infant mortality than black women with higher education. Same patterns seen for white vs. black women with little education. Paradox: women get sicker but men die quicker.
