Document Summary

Roman architecture and monumental art (end of the 4th - 3rd c. bc) Appius claudius built highways all throughout southern italy to help with expansion efforts. Beginning of the huge network of roman roads that would cover europe. Made to bring water to rome and eventually other parts of the roman. There survives a manual about how to treat the water and how to build the aqueducts. Fountains that were all over rome were fed by aqueducts. Romans were at war with the samnites (samnite wars) Samnites were from central and southern italy and were notorious warriors. Armor with 3 metal disks on leather. Tomb painting from 4th c. paestum shows samnite warriors on the move. A tomb that was inside the city walls. Very strange and rare for the time period. Esquiline fragment shows scenes from the samnite wars. The names inscribed next to the figures tell us this.
