Hoof specialized part of the integument, horny epidermis. Epidermis = three parts: wall, sole and frog. Wall visible part of the hoof (when it is on the ground) Thickest at the dorsal aspect and thins palmar/plantar. Toe dorsal part of the wall. Quarters medial and lateral wall parts. Heels (angles) palmar/plantar aspect of the wall. Sole the concave surface on the ventral aspect of the hoof. (everything visible except the frog and walls along the outer rim. Frog wedge shaped structure between the sole, bars and heel bulbs. Heart of the horse foot compression aids in pumping blood back up the leg. Coronary epidermis (outer) bulk of the hoof wall, generated at the coronary band extends distally (pigmented) interdigitates with the laminae of the dermis. (non pigmented) Laminar epidermis (inner) layer of the hoof wall that. Sole epidermis tubular wall, like coronary (not pictured) Frog epidermis wavy tubular wall, not fully keratinized so softer, not as rigid (not pictured)
