ANFS251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Monogastric, Salivary Gland, Hemicellulose
Document Summary
Carb digestion in monogastric animals: enzymes they break down compounds. Dietary carbs converted into monosaccharides (simple sugars) Amylase enzyme involved in carb (amylose) digestion in monogastrics. Primary source is pancreas: the enzyme is secreted into duodenum. Starch maltose (glucose + glucose: other enzymes from mucosal lining of duodenum, enzyme lvls and digestibility vary in diff species. Why some need more carbs than others. Monogastric animals: dietary carb lvls exceed animal"s ability to digest it, diarrhea may occur. When undigested carbs reach li, microbial organisms start to digest them, by products are produced that cause water to be absorbed in git, thus causing diarrhea: monosaccharides are rapidly absorbed by si (many converted to glucose) Transported via blood to be metabolized as energy source. Can carbs be stored away and used later: carb storage. Rapid release in muscular activity/ exercise as a form of energy. Complex (fiber) carb digestion: no enzymes to digest cellulose, hemicellulose, and other carbs in fibrous feedstuffs.
