ANFS251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Weaning
Document Summary
Growth curves: factors that control growth. Growth curve (graph: all animals follow same growth curve. Diffs are in how large it gets and how long it takes to get there. Conception, birth, weaning, puberty, (start of breeding), (slaughter), maturity. This one doesn"t start at birth but rather conception. Growth curve increases rapidly from birth to puberty and then starts to slow down and eventually tapers off. Growth curve and maturity: growth curves usually show 3 lines; 1 for muscle, bone, and another for fat growth, as it reaches maturity. Bone reaches full growth early on and remains pretty stable. Effect of sex on growth: in gen, females mature at faster rate and younger age than male animals. Growth-curve pre-weaning: pig is the fastest followed by lambs, calf, colt, and child. Adulthood and maintenance: maintenance (nutrition at adulthood) of body weight these animals have the same feed requirements until they have become elders .
