Document Summary

In natural environments, the location of animals is not only influenced by food, water, and shelter, but also the location of other animals. Personal space: minimum distance that an individual allows between itself and another individual. In noncompetitive environments, personal space requirements are minimal. In contrast, as resources become limited and there is competition, the personal space requirements increase. Personal space is dynamic and it changes with the circumstances. Aggression or threats of aggression are used to exclude others from an animal"s personal space. Aggression is most evident when individuals actively compete. Aggression stops when subordinate animals perform submissive behaviors or leave personal space. Without this there will be a greater change of aggression because of infringement on personal space. Temporary aggregations: schools of fish, flocks of birds, insect swarms. Permanent groups: considerable social structure and distinct patterns of interaction between individuals. The maximum distance that an animal tolerates between itself and a predator, conspecific or allospecific stranger, human, etc.
