ANFS251 Lecture 26: Beef Cattle - Part 2
Document Summary
To provide nutrients not available in sufficient quantity or adequate balance. Dominant range forage is high in fiber and deficient in both cp and energy for cows in late gestation and early lactation. When forage is limited in quantity and/or quality, supplementation may necessary to maintain the desired level of productivity. Classified broadly as protein supplements or energy supplements. Protein supplements usually contain 25% cp , energy supplements usually contain<18% cp. For most cows grazing range forages, protein is the first limiting nutrient. Energy may be deficient as well, but usually not as deficient as the protein. Energy available in range forage is of little use without protein to support microbial digestion. Intake can be stimulated by supplementation with protein or non-protein nitrogen (npn) Supplementation of cows grazing native range has not always been cost effective, because subsequent calf growth has not been consistently improved.
