Articulating a lot of principles behind modern architecture we are looking at. Establishing the desire to cover things with ornament is very primitive desire. The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from utilitarian objects . Need to go further than that in getting rid of ornament. See, therin lies the greatness of our age, that it is incapable of producing a new ornament. We have outgrown ornament; we have fought our way through to freedom from ornament . We have art, which has taken the place of ornament. After the toils and troubles of the day we go to beethoven or to tristan. This my shoemaker cannot do but anyone who goes to the ninth symphony and then sits down and designs a wallpaper pattern that is either a confidence trickster or degenerate . Freedom from ornament is a sign of spiritual strength . Compress elements that are essential to new architecture.
