Very close to the bay and this becomes important when we think about the name of the building. It"s called the ship house because the roof of the house is supposed to look like the bottom of the ship. o. This is used to suggest that many of the people in this town made their living off the ocean, as fishermen or as merchants. What does the architecture tell us about their culture? o o o o o o. This was a civic and religious building where town and political meetings were held. We could look at this today as being a large multi purpose room. This type of place was also a new thing to this area, this idea of congregation. Within new england, the congregations that met in this area with this religion would give way to the term congregationalism the religious identity of puritans. It doesn"t really look like a church, that"s the point!
