Public health concerned with the health of populations, concentration on. Prevention not treatment: assessment of health status, policy development, assurance of healthful living conditions. Medicine is primarily concerned with health of the individual. Health consists of a state of complete physical mental and social well-being (multi-dimensioned) Germs responsible for spreading contagious disease, germ theory: does not explain injury, cancer, stroke, diabetes, etc. Host-agent-environment model of disease: host = pop at risk of becoming ill, agent = pathogen, environment = brings both in to contact. Population health is measured by stats that describe the prevalence rate of health problems: prevalence rates = # cases per 100,000 people, allows for comparisons over time and between various pop groups. Epidemiologic transition = shift from infection to chronic diseases: improvements in nutrition and living conditions, improvements in sanitation, water supply, food quality, hygiene. Many mental problems are the product of physiologic and environmental processes: among most prevalent and costly health problems.
