Document Summary

Phospholipid: a charged nitrogen containing molecule and a phosphate grop and glycerol and 2 fatty acids. The head is polar and likes to interact with water, the tails are nonpolar and hate water. Tails are also c and h rich. Amphipathic: having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts. 3 ways proteins and lipids are similar and 3 ways they are different. Both show structural dif at each end. Both contain c and h and covalent bonds. There are 3 cat of lipids (structurally) Chapter 17 : genes and making gene products: gene structure, transcription, eukaryotic rna processing, translation. Gene : a sequence of dna that codes for a product, and its associated control regions. Transcription : making an rna product from a gene. Initiation: specific proteins associate w the control region(s) of a gene. In prokaryotes, sigma (recognizes the promoter) and rna polymerase (builds the product) form a holoenzyme. Rna polymerase separates dna strands to form the transcription bubble.
