Document Summary

Removing top predators observe this effect in action. Researchers removed the sea star from its habitat, mussels took over and dramatically changed the rest of the community. Keystone species has a much greater impact on the distribution. Disturbance- any strong, short-lived disruption to a community that changes the distribution of living or nonliving resources. A disturbance impact is a function of three factors. Succession is the recovery that follows a severe disturbance. Primary succession occurs when a disturbance removes the soil and its organisms,as well as organisms that live above soil surface. Secondary succession occurs when a disturbance removes some or all of the organisms from an area but leaves the soil intact, including the seeds and microorganisms. Species richness is the number of species present in a given community.
