BISC208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Rock Dove, Special Creation, Aureus
Document Summary
Evidence for evolution (class discussion, fossil record, not complete, genetic mutations, only source for new material, random and back to darwinian thinking, developmental homology, chapter 22. Earth was around for a billion years before any life: homology, common ancestory but different purposes, vestigial trait. A reduced or incompletely developed structure that has no or reduced function: clearly similar to functioning organs or structures in closely related species, was functional for an ancestor but no longer useful. Inconsistent with the idea of special creation(god: genetic homology, humans and bananas are 50% homologous. ~1% difference means a different species: structural homology. Shows that we share common ancestors: rock dove = pigeon, darwin"s 4 postulates. Individuals in a population vary in their traits. Some of these differences are heritable; they are passed on to offspring: can"t pass your tattoos on to your offspring. In each generation, many more offspring are produced than can survive.
