Trade winds occur between 30 degrees n and s latitude. You return from a trip to a temperate lake and report that you couldn"t swim much because the water was cold and there was way to much algae growing in the water. It appears that we are emerging from a very strong el nino period. Warmer than normal sea surface temps in east pacific. Winds push water around and make ocean currents, upwelling zones biomes. When currents bump into land, they go towards the poles (both north and south) Warm currents run along the east coasts of continents. Clockwise gyres in the north hemisphere; counter clockwise in the south hemisphere. Cold currents run down the western coasts of continents. Upwelling: cold bottom water brings nutrients back up to the surface. Trade winds affect the currents and upwelling; drop in trade winds results in changes in jet stream.
