Its not one thing : a three part thesis about the nature and proper methodology of psychology, psychology is the scienfic study of behavior, methodology: psychology should not concern itself with mental states be. Tolman & colleagues, experimental design: experiment 1: rats were divided into 3 groups. Tolman experiment 1 predictions: suppose rats learn by srr- alone. Which group would learn the fastest and why: group 1 this group should learn the fastest. They will start by wandering aimlessly, but will learn after several days of reward: group 2 they will not learn ; they will wander aimlessly, group 3 this group will start learning after day 11. At that point, their progress would occur at roughly the same rate as the progress of group 1 starting on day 1. Conclusion : rats learn, in part, by latent learning, this goes against behaviorism because there is no reinforcement in this conclusion & latent learning draws on idea of mental states.
