CGSC170 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Second-Language Acquisition
Document Summary
The stimulus is not enough to deduce language. What a young infant is exposed to is not completely enough. You would think infants listen to parents and replicate the words. But mom doesn"t say anywhere near enough for the infant to acquire what they need for all of language. Ex- kid saying i goed to the store" . Guaranteed parent didn"t say those words to child. They take what they hear and apply it to. There is not enough in environment to account for what they know at young age. Asl kids babble with hands when hearing kids bible with mouth. First word, first sign, at about 12 months. Make the same kinds of errors at the same ages. Not enough in environment to account for language learning. Second language learning as adult is harder to grasp this than a child.
