Brains respond in distinctive and flexible ways to damage an impairment. Characteristic partial breakdown patterns in response to local damage/lesions. Symbolic computer programs like the turing machine either work or they don"t. Parallel rather than serial processing as activation spreads through a network. Processing does not reply on explicit rules. Other than those governing how activation flows through the network. Can be used to model satisfaction of soft constraints. Intended as models of information processing at the algorithmic level. All inputs go through all pathways until it reaches an output. Network contains a large number of units. Each unit has a varying level of activation. Activation value of a layer is determined by activation values of all individual units of that layer. Spread s throughout all layers of a network. Governs how information is processed within the network. Parallel processing because flow of information is determined by what happens in all of the units in a given layer.
