CGSC379 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Ototoxicity, Presbycusis, Tinnitus
Document Summary
Aging of the ear, both cochlear and central. Speech recognition scores poorer than expected (interfering noise) Hidden hearing loss may do well with audiogram but have very poor speech recognition; esp. Activities of daily living (lawn care, woodwork) Decreased cartilage leads to collapsing canals under headsets. Dry skin, increased hair in canals causes wax blockage. May need processing time, motor control time. Short term memory loss (forgot what to do) Nervous, don"t want to fail, want to please. Tinnitus, confusing ringing with signal, switch stimuli. Speech reception thresholds may show better hearing than tones. Start with speech tasks to ease anxiety. Dumping ground term for persons with memory loss. Can use cross checks with oae, tymps, reflexes. May be collapsing canals under headphones, switch to inserts. Tactile sensitivity (can manipulate battery, controls, get in and out of ear?) Memory (remember how to put it in and out?, remember to open battery case, change programs?)
