We don"t rake all the extraneous variables into account. We don"t have control when we do our own experiments. We always think we controlled everything else so we think our independent variable is this, Thursday, january 5, 2017 but maybe it is that. Goal of scienti c experiments: control variance. Variance: difference in scores between and among people. There is a picture in your notebook if you need more help : between groups variance: differences between and among groups. If the experimenter is responsible fro the variance, than that variance is explained. We can explain it because we created it: within groups variance: differences between and among people in the same group. We cannot explain it, because we did not create it. We want the explained variance to be bigger. We want to try to control all but one thing so we can say that y varies because of x.
