Artemis and apollo children of zeus and leto (a titan) Apollo and artemis : manly beauty and nature. Leto having to keep running from hera around aegean sea. Gives birth to artemis first, who turns around and helps give birth to apollo, artemis goddess of birth. Find her in woods, peaks, open land. Hunters would hang trophies on tree trunks as a gift to artemis. Often seen running, with arrows, active poses; usually seen short chiton of a maiden often tall and slender with hair that is girlish hairstyle. Aspect of her is a leader of a band of unwed girls as in the muses and graces and nymphs accompany her as well. Arkteia (initiation period, a festival) - girls would go to sanctuary where they would play the bear; they stay at the sanctuary for days and participate in rituals to come of age.
