The us has a dual court system. Other countries have a single national court system. Prosecutors have great influence because they are concerned with all aspects of the criminal justice process: from arrest to final disposition of a case, prosecutors can make decisions that largely determine the defendants fate. May recommend bail amounts, sentences, drop charges, Prosecutors links with the other actors in the system shape the prose(cid:272)utor"s decisions. Usually elected for 4-year term (except 3 states: springboard to higher office, political pressure so may apply power biasedly. Dilemma to uphold justice but do all possible to convict: view self as instrument of law enforcement. As lawyer for state govt: trial counsel for the police. Reflect views for the police: house counsel for the police. Provide legal advice to police so arrest will stand up in court: representative of the court.
