EDUC230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Autism Spectrum, Nonverbal Communication, Developmental Disability
Document Summary
Have all absorbing and narrow areas of interest. The mildly affected student may escape detection and treatment and may just seem a little odd or eccentric. May have a vast preoccupation (may manifest as an obsession) with certain topics- often on transportation- trains, buses, etc. or other topics- dinosaurs, computers, maps, etc. These preoccupations may be pursued to the exclusion of other activities and may change over time, but usually do not change in intensity. May have problems with creative thinking and imagination secondary to the inflexibility. Often cannot see the connection between starting a task and what will be the result, or cannot understand the point of a story, the moral, etc. Severity of impairments is generally greater in autism spectrum disorders. One expert describes hfa as having a dash of autism . Students with hfa generally have less learning and speech problems and intelligence is usually average or above average.
