1960s Counter Culture
• The “Counter Culture”
o Referred to the sense that people in their 20s and 30s were turning their backs on
playing by the rules, end all to life being buying a small house with your family
▪ They don’t want to settle down and conform
▪ They began to distance themselves from their parents
o Music
▪ Both a cause and effect
▪ At this time, what you listen to is a marker of what you care about and value
▪ What are the groups really saying?
▪ Most popular group in the 60s: The Beatles
• Music at first is clean
• Starts to change
• Becomes more controversial
o “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
o Talking about LSD
▪ Hallucinogenic drug becoming popular at this time
o Satirical
▪ Makes fun of middle class America
o Innuendo
▪ Happiness is a warm gun
o Some if goofy
• Answer to all problems was relationships
o Focus on your own happiness
o “All you need is love”
▪ Singers speak out against the Vietnam War
• Folk singers
▪ Music doesn’t appeal to the older generation
