• Political and Social Protest
o Vietnam became the least popular war in the United States history
▪ At first it was popular
▪ They wanted to fight communism everywhere
• Otherwise all of Southeast Asia will be lost
▪ They looked back on history, and thought they were doing what they didn’t do
with Hitler
o Military grows dramatically
▪ At best it’s a stalemate, at worst we’re losing territory in Vietnam
o Became more and more unpopular
▪ People realized it was a civil war within Vietnam
▪ People think we should scale back our involvement or get out entirely
o On college campuses, people protested
▪ Columbia had buildings ceased
▪ They protested professors who are doing research to improve weapons
o Other protest
▪ The Tinker family had their children wear black arm bands to protest the war
▪ Students burn their draft cards
o Peace marches on Washington
▪ No other war had been this unpopular and controversial
o At the end, 57,000 died in Vietnam
▪ Several hundred thousand wounded
o More and more outspoken protests from black activists
▪ Time to form a Black Panther party
▪ Black Power
