Document Summary
There"s massive consolidation, and as districts consolidate, small schools merge with each other. Many high schools consolidate instead of having 3 or 4 tiny high schools, let"s have one big one. Today, the avg size of american highschool is slightly over 1000, back then it was ~300, 400. Larger schools are more likely to display these characteristics discussed today: Hundreds of options, esp in 1970s and 80s. Ap, honors, college prep; not unusual to have 4 or 5 ability levels in larger high schools for a course. Extracurriculars expanded in variety: wide array of clubs and sports. Social services; many schools had always had a school nurse, but then more and more schools got social workers, day care centers, counselors: so teenage mothers don"t have to drop out of school. Of the credit hours required for graduation, about were spelled out and the other half were mostly electives: notion of state standards were not around.
