ENWC314 Lecture 5: ENWC314 Lecture 5 notes
Document Summary
New species: human ancestor, dinosaur, spider, etc. Some more modern and some in fossil record. More time and more rapid evolution permits the evolution of new species. Larger areas and physically or biologically complex habitats provide more niches. Competition affects niche partitioning and predation retards competitive exclusion: ambient energy. Richness is limited by the partitioning of production or energy among species. Light, pressure, temp. , salinity, waves, and other factors vary w/ depth. Must be narrowly focused for each individual species. Suggests peak diversity in moderate depth and low diversity in shallow or very deep regions. Diversity decreases as elevation increases: gamma diversity is the total species diversity in the landscape. Correspondence between latitude and altitude tropics are in the lower altitudes and latitudes. Altitudinal ecosystems: altitudinal ecosystems are somewhat similar to latitudinal gradients in forming the ecosystems, factors influencing biomes. Prevailing wind-direction and strength (on a global level) Note that diversity is influenced a great deal by weather, temperature.
