Nematodes that live in warm climates; come in contact w/ contaminated soil. Larvae (under 1mm long) wrinkle into skin; itchy at entry. Enter blood stream, pass heart, up windpipe, into throat, swallowed, into digestive tract, in small intestine, mature, mate, and bite into lining of gut to drink your blood (for often years at a time) People can have hundreds of hookworms at a time; more worms = more symptoms. Rarely kills you, but cause anemia, protein deficiency, gi problems, weight loss, fatigue: severe anemia stunted growth stig(cid:373)a of (cid:862)lazy, slo(cid:449), souther(cid:374)er(cid:863) Earlier: thrived because of wide spread poverty, and perpetuated the poverty. Very few people in us actually get hookworm. Up to 740 million people infected; neglected disease that traps people in poverty. Eggs in feces rhabditiform larva hatches filariform larva penetrates skin. Causes anemia; does not kill host; treatable, but severe disabilities in the host when present.
