Aim was economic and geopolitical, linking german and french industry to prevent future war, combining resources to rebuild. Eu created by maastricht treaty of 1991. Treaty of lisbon - signed 2007 effective 2009 created constitutional basis of eu. Currently 27 members - with 6 applications pending (28-1)
