Energy associated with an object because of its motion is described as kinetic energy. Potential energy is described as the capacity to do work. Remember that the temperature of the air or water is determined only by the average kinetic energy of the molecules present. Kinetic energy is dependent on the speed of movement of the molecules. The faster the movement, the greater the kinetic energy. Greater speeds (kinetic energy) are measured as a greater temperature. If a cup of cofee is left in a room for 75 minutes the cofee. Cools down because heat has been transferred from the cofee to the surrounding classroom. It is also important to realize that the outside atmosphere of the classroom warms up.
