GEOG372 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Spatial Analysis, Lebesgue Covering Dimension, Variogram
Document Summary
To dev a fuller understanding of the ways in which we think about the nature of spatial variation. Proximity effects are key to understanding spatial variation. Issues of geographic scale and level of detail are key to building appropriate representations of the world. Dif measures of the world co-vary and understanding the nature of covariation can help us to predict them. Bc rarely have complete info about world, must selectively sample from it and relate what we know to what we know less of. Geographic information science is about representing spatial and temporal phenomena in the observable world, and because the observable world is complicated, this task is difficult, error prone, and uncertain. Move from finer to coarse spatial and temporal scales: Viewed in aggregate human activity exhibits structure across geographic spaces. Gi scientist must be competent in discarding (or not feeling troubled in measure) the inessentials while retaining the salient characteristics of the observable world.
