Document Summary
Hazard- geological process that is a potential threat to life or property. Disaster- when a hazard actually has an impact. Often defined as an event over a limited time in a defined area. Catastrophe- massive disaster that requires significant amount of money or time to recover. Constantly changing: matter worked on by energy. Energy is either from within (internal) or external. Earth materials + energy = geological process results in change. Internal energy (heat in earth) drives deep processes: uplift, formation of continents/ocean basins, earthquake (heat process driven by heat coming from inside the earth) --tsunami, volcano (heat process driven by heat coming from inside the earth) tsunami. Earth materials + energy = process change. External energy (solar) helps drive surface processes: inturn drives water cycle, ocean circulation, weather. People get in the way makes process/ change a hazard. Solar: incoming light converted to heat in atmosphere, oceans, and land. Gravity: drives landslides/ water flow, creates pressure within earth.
