Mafic (basaltic): lowest sio2 (silica, 5-20% iron and magnesium, dark minerals, rocks are black and dark gray (basalt) Intermediate (andesitic): intermediate sio2 (silica, <10% iron and magnesium, mix of light and dark minerals, rocks are dark gray to beige in color (andesite) Felsic (rhyolitic): highest sio2 (silica, very little iron and magnesium, many light colored minerals, rocks are light gray to pink (rhyolite) Silica in melt forms a three-sided pyramid or tetrahedron.
