GEOL105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Quick Clay, Landslide, Debris Flow
Document Summary
Erosion: sediment is removed, transported away and deposited elsewhere. Much erosion is slow, somewhat constant and removes only a small amount of sediment. However, large masses of material may be eroded: often rapidly. Different types of mass wasting are often called mass movements. About 25 fatalities a year in us. Flows: material moves chaotically, like a fluid. Cohesive unit of rock or soil moves down long a clearly defined plane. Translation slide: loose material moving down a surface. Slumping may be on a small scale (can still be slow but big problem) or on a large scale where we put in roads. Slumping often occurs where highways cut into unstable slopes. Chaotic flow of unconsolidated rock, soil, vegetation and often water. Downpours in arid areas may trigger debris flows. Usually not as rapid as debris flows. Quick clay flows on banks of the st. lawrence river, canada. Volcanic lahars are a special case of mudflows.
