America"s multicultural umbrella includes about 150 distinct ethnic or racial groups. By 2050 only 58% of the population are white. Because of huge waves of immigrations, one in five people are either foreign born or first generation us citizens. Understanding other cultures is essential in understanding ourselves and our place in the world. It is important to know and to understand the plights of underdeveloped countries and how these affect our own country and how our country and its policies affect other countries. Understanding other cultures gives us a less ethnocentric view of the world and challenges us to put ourselves in someone else"s shoes. Families are more fluid than they were in the past. Same-sex couples, biracial families: many changes in the family reflect adaptations to larger societal transformations. As a country, we continue to cling to a number of myths about the families of past generations.
