Right after civil war women considered innately purer, more virtuous than men, benefit to society and men. Virtuous woman was needed at home to take care of children. Middle-class women only worked if they had to (husband could not provide for them) shameful. Emergence of the modern american family: 1900. Wife (morally superior) cared for home and children. Attention and energy of husband and wife increasingly centered on each other and on children.
