Less children mortality - fewer kids born, greater longevity. Childrearing came to be seen as important. Women"s colleges - to enhance their capabilities as mothers. Tie for a woman to her husband most important part of their identity. Instead of nurturer to her husband she had to be sexual, romantic partner. Women encouraged to be freer with men in order to attract a husband. Sociologists encouraged this - demise of american family depended on romantic love and marital sexuality. Cosmetics industry boomed: new images of women as sexual beings. Birth control became important - no longer woman just as mother. Romantic love became basis for marriage and parental choices of spourses became a thing of the past. People could not afford to live on their own. 1 in 5 never had children (1 in 10 norm)
