A woman"s place was in the home: government. Heavily slave-owning, with agricultural work being done by slaves in the nearby conquered city of messenia. Military and warfare were important: culture. Women did not go to war, but had many of the same rights as men. Were allowed to compete in rough athletics. Nearly 40% of spartan women owned land: government. Due to slave uprisings being common, spartans often lived in a state of martial law. Both communities compared themselves to each other, with each believing their way of life was better than the other. The peloponnesian league: before the persian war, sparta allied with a group of cities on the greek peninsula, this alliance emphasized the difference between the spartan peninsulars and the mainland athenians.
