The romanoff family had ruled for about 300 years by the 1900s. This was a system that bonded people to the land - system of slavery. Abolition of this allows some peasants to acquire more wealth. Made it easier for some people to leave the land and take part in new forms of production in towns and cities. Russia began to experience significant industrial growth in the 1890s. Wave of strikes among textile workers in st petersburg in the 1890s. Some of these workers had become familiar with marx"s ideas. Came from a well off family, grew up a few hundred miles east of moscow. Parents were not radicals - supporters of the tsar.
