Southern states began to secede from the union (south carolina first) all before lincoln became president. Capital of confederacy was virgina (west virginia divides) 4 states that had slaves that did not secede (delaware, maryland, kentucky, missouri) Lincoln did not anticipate length of the war. Americans debated if it was worth it to continue to fight. Union closed and blocked southern ports in nola and sc to starve confederacy. Proposition of ending slavery so that england would not interfere. Emancipation proclamation only applied to states against the union. Ends in 1865 robert e lee surrenders (virginia) Britain was close to recognizing confederacy as a legit country. Us would have been defeated if britain joined the war. Difficult to free slaves in states in which they could not control. As southern states became defeated, slaves were freed, joined with union forces to fight. Instead of trying to end the war to preserve the union, decided to end slavery.
