William mckinley is assassinated sept 6, 1901 in buffalo ny. Tried to form a labor union, was fired and blacklisted. Frustration grows and ultimately chooses to shoot president. Mckinley lives for a few days, dies on sept 14, 1901. War ends in august, roosevelt runs for governor and wins. In 1900 mckinley asks him to be his running mate. Vp doesn"t hold a lot of glamour. Did it anyway because he believed it was his duty to the party. Resigns as governor to become vice president. Roosevelt was so bored being vp he was out hunting. Had to go find him when the president died. Watershed event with passing of 19th century to 20th. Mckinley was last president who served in civil war. In comes roosevelt saying 20th century will be u. s"s century . Changed name of executive mansion to white house. Brought family and animals into the white house.
