JWST327 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Antisemitism, Catechumen, Status Symbol
Document Summary
During period of the enlightenment, new ideas were proposed and people rebelled against church thought: there was more equality between jews and christians, jews hired christians and sold to christians. Jews were evil and contact with them would give evilness. Jews were forced to sit in priest"s sermons and denounce their religion. Rome & vatican city were very conservative: if something happened in the northern cities, it was perceived a lot worse in rome. Jews created a petition to take to papal to be treated fairly: sent to secretary of state then the pope, and they said they didn"t really have a good response because they were still seen as unequal. Forced baptisms: seen as a great gift by the church, housed women until they agreed to be baptized, baptized children and didn"t give them back to their unbaptized mothers, accidental baptisms . All baptisms are valid if someone says somethings. Even a jew could give a baptism.
