Some organs (like kidneys) lie posterior to the peritoneal membrane; position is called retroperitoneal. Some organs (like the urinary bladder) extend inferior to the peritoneal cavity; position is called infraperitoneal. Cells are building blocks of all plants and animals. All new cells come from division of preexisting cells. Cells are smallest living units that perform all vital physiological functions tissues of the body (development of differences/functional characteristics) Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, neural tissue. Mitochondria, nucleus, er, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes: cell, cytoplasm, plasma membrane, body fluid distribution. Integral - can"t be removed without damaging membrane; most penetrate the entire membrane, called transmembrane. Isotonic - doesn"t cause osmotic flow across membrane. Hypotonic - we have osmotic flow into the cell; swelling and hemolysis.
